 | My view of the play sits between the two very varying reviews shown so far from club members. I feel that the play was powerful in parts and still retained the power to shock. It was occasionally slightly clumsy but it did provoke a reaction in the audience - not something that every play manages to achieve. It will be interesting to consider it in the context of the two parts of the play still to come. I must commend the Cock Tavern for staging it - as someone who was a student in the early 1970s in London when Edward Bond was at the height of his fame I never thought I would see a world premiere in a 60 seat theatre in Kilburn. | Another one where the production would get an extra star, but the play doesn't deserve it. This is the world premiere of Bond’s new play. In the first 20-minute act we get a double infanticide and a rape. After the interval and eighteen years have passed, things quieten down for a while before another rape, a murder and a spot of incest! I think Bond is making a point about the eternal cycle of war, but for me he obscures this so much, which seems rather pointless if you’re trying to make a point! As with the previous plays in this season, the staging and performances are excellent, with Stephen Billington, Helen Bang and Timothy O’Hara (also excellent as Scopey in The Pope’s Wedding) pulling off the difficult task of making this all seem believable. - Gareth James | 11 Nov 10 |
| It is a shame that some people seem unable to see what I actually felt was an extemely complex piece of drama, swinging relentlessly between naturalism and the meta-theatrical in which the killing of the babies was really a symptom of a disease much larger, in which far more of us are implicated. as to the production itself I thought the acting to be generally of a very high standard delivering nuanced and sensitive performances despite the sometimes intensely (and clearly intentionally) unnaturalistic elements of the plot. - James | 31 Oct 10 |
| Hopefully not! The only positive part of this abysmal display of gross amateurism is an interval after 15 minutes, in which you can run for your life. As for the play, it's about killing babies....now where have I seen that before, Mr Bond? - coral | 29 Oct 10 |
