Shaun the Sheep - Live on Stage - Shaun's Big Show (Gordon Craig Theatre, Stevenage)

 | aHaving incorporated a visit to the Show into a family celebration all three generations of our family travelled to Bristol to see the Show in August. The family converged on Bristol from Yorkshire,North Wales and Essex and what a disappointmen the whole experience. The show had a wafer thin storyline,. there were no songs and the dance routines were both amateurish and outdated. The Show made no attempt to portray the individual personalities of the characters that we have all come to know and love. The sheep were virtually all the same height and appearance,the farmer was skinny and tall and moved more like Wayne Sleep than the farmer and poor old Bitzer baely got a look in. The whole show was just a cynical exercise in extracting money from fans of the wonderful animation. | Very disappointed with this show, the first half was very slow, second half slightly better. Hardly any costumes, no stage set changes, no storyline, no talking/narration, no audience participation. Most of the children in the audience were getting very bored as they did not understand the different dance genres and each dance went on far too long. My children asked at the interval if they could go now. We'd seen Peppa Pig last year and it was fantastic, children and adults came out buzzing. | I'm right with everything Binty said on this - Shaun the Sheep fans can only be disappointed. It needed a story-line, which is what the watchers of the show like - the dance could be incorporated into that. The music also could have done with being aimed at kids as well as adults (a mixture perhaps). I'm a fan of ballet, but would probably prefer to see swan lake with swans... not sheep. - Emma | 20 Aug 11 |
| I have to agree with Wendy. I think that fans of anything 'dancey' will love it but fans of the Sean the Sheep show will be left disappointed. Being a 7th birthday treat for my Son I felt really bad when he told his Dad it was rubbish and was for girls. However, my friend's five year old son thought it was great. Very little audience participation and when we did try and join in we were told to "shush" by some grumpy grampy! For over sixty quid for the four of us we left feeling more than a little deflated :-( - Binty | 18 Aug 11 |
| I have to say that, after much looking forward to this production, my 4 year old grand daughter, her mum and I were very disappointed. Children's shows need interaction. There was none. The musical 'gags' that set the dance themes were completely lost on the young audience, who didn't know the music (e.g. 'Singing in the rain', Dirty Dancing') (Maybe this was meant for the grown-ups?) The second half, which we nearly didn't stay for, was rather better than the first but the total lack of any joy on my grand daughter's usually animated face was upsetting.
