Simon Boccanegra (Royal Opera House, West End)

| Agree that Domingo is not a baritone, but once got passed that realisation (!) he was superb. Quite the best thing at the Opera House this year. The orchestra played beautifully for Pappano. Just to clarify, the version performed is the 1881 one. Judge's production (in which Domingo sang as Gabriele Adorno) was originally of the 1857 version and was reworked (for Washington Opera) for the 1881 version and then brought back to Covent Garden. More traditional and less insightful than the Mojinsky. Finally, no one seem to have remarked that the production (notably the last scene) was reworked for this revival. Presumably with the director as he got a curtain call on the first night, and presumably to play to Domingo's strengths. - David Cloke | 07 Jul 10 |
