| Well, I stayed to the end as well, but I regretted it: the failings were all too obvious by half-time. Cut the sub-plot? Yes, but for heaven's sake retain the Lady Would-Be encounter with Volpone;it's the funniest scene in the play. And that sums it up. Humour (in either the usual or in Jonson's special sense) was not the priority in this dismal production. Such a disappointment - The Alchemist was done here brilliantly some years ago. - 195.93.34.11) | 02 Nov 04 | |
| Well I enjoyed it - and so did the rest of the audience who stayed for the end! - 82.35.28.56) | 29 Oct 04 | |
| A crass revival of one of Jonson's masterpieces. A piece that makes a mockery of the play and destroys the power of the greed of the three suitors to Volpone's wealth. The production loses the whole of the Politic Would-be sub-plot and makes pantomine humour in a serious play. An excellent cast and play wasted on a bad production. So bad I walked out at the interval. A first for me in over 15 years of theatregoing! - 217.158.168.199) | 28 Oct 04 |
