 | I have to say I'm surprised that this production has received such negative feedback! Although not the best version I have seen, it was certainly not the worst. Ali Watt's Mercutio was suburb - really livening up the dialogue. Beccy Wright's Nurse was also credible, as was Rhys King's performance. Richard Pryal was better suited to the Frair Lawrence character to that of Tybalt (who I personally found rigid and insipid). Biggest disappointment of the night came from Craig Vye, who provided an embarrassingly tedious and undeveloped Romeo. Hannah Edwards' portrayal of Juliet was certainly interesting - she managed to highlight Juliet's immaturity to an extent to which I haven't seen before. Overall- a good performance, hindered by the disappointing lead performances. Watts, King and Wright, however, brought mach needed spark to the somewhat vapid performance. May I also add that the young community actors/musicians did a marvelous job in their various supporting roles. - E | 02 Mar 13 |
| Sad to report that this production was pretty disastrous. I love this theatre, and it troubles me to report back so negatively. The local community actors whilst commendable to see young bodies on stage were given some truly insipid direction, you were unsure as to whether you watching an amateur or community production with some of the lamest, languid and laughable scene changes seen in memory. The actors playing Romeo and Juliet lacked any connection- zero spark between them. The rest of the cast, no doubt individually talented all floundered and often garbled the words with little understanding of the meaning. The play should channel youthful passion and desire. Instead you got a generic, dull and lacklustre production which plodded along to no point or purpose that I could discern. Such a waste of everyones time. Please can the Theatre Royal do better in future, such a shame to see a great theatre wasted with productions of this poor quality. - Paul | 01 Mar 13 |
| Bit of a disaster I'm afraid this one. This piece looked and felt like an average community theatre production. I expect more from the Theatre Royal... work that is inventive... better conceived directed and performed, in short we expect quality 'professional' work. | Not sure where this was meant to be taking place either. Spain? Greece? Romeo and Mercutio were ok but the rest just wandered on and did their bit and got off again. We've been to the Theater Royal a couple of times and this was the worst we've seen. Why can't they do something more relevant to young people? R+J was just boring. - James | 27 Feb 13 |
