If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet (The Bush Theatre, Inner London)

| I felt I was watching an succession of impressions. David Brent and Alison Steadman with a spitting Image Scotsman thrown in for good/bad measure. The dialogue was tedious and going nowhere. What is the point I kept thinking? Fortunately I was relieved of having to sit through the second act due to the indisposition of one of the cast members ..... perhaps they'd had enough of it too? The Bush well off form. - rds | 19 Feb 10 | |
| Ingeniously staged, but an underdeveloped plot left me feeling ultimately unsatisfied. I rather liked George, played by Michael Begley, and thought he the better of the two male characters, Rafe Spall's ultra showy performance as his brother, Terry, gave me the impression he was off on one of his own? The daughter, Anna played by Ailish O'Connor, however was excellent and utterly convincing. Not a bad effort from this young writer and no doubt not his last either and yet further proof, if need be, that The Bush gives the Royal Court a run for its money as the leading production house for new writers. - rds | 15 Nov 09 | |
| There's a lot going on here - a fair number of themes converge, some of which not necesarily relating to others. Having said that, I was captivated for it's 100 minute uninterrupted running time. The short scenes are punchy but most have depth and the staging makes superb use of a re-confgured Bush, where the acting and audience spaces seem one. The major problem with the piece is that two characters - the daughter and the uncle -are well developed and wonderfully acted, but the parents aren't (and the father, whether because of the writing direction or acting I don't know, is just bizarre and completely unbelievable). Still, it's the fourth great night in a row at the Bush which is now officiclly on a roll! - Gareth James | 12 Nov 09 | |
| Very moving and funny. This has stayed with me ever since I watched it. I think for green obsessions you could replace it with anything that sucks up a parent's time and stops them from engaging with their children. The performances were fantastic all round and there was a real sense, when I watched it, that this was an event - something very special indeed. - S Burns | 27 Oct 09 |
