American Briefs (General, Inner London)

| A clutch of American-written sketches/shorts 'translated' into British English and performed by a quartet of actors in a new and trying-hard venue above a disgusting gay pub in Victoria. Three of the four are extremely talented and show great range in age and character, one can't really escape his Yorkshire accent. Most gay men will find something to identify with in several of the pieces which show relationships in the new, unformed, developing and over-developed stages from a shy kiss at a school dance to probably the best, a cruising pasa doble performed by a sex-worn veteran of the Hoist and a curious scally from the council estate. There are jarring notes where the Americanisms don't really translate - certainly Wandsworth Comprehensive school wouldn't have a 'prom' or a 'yearbook' but the dialogue is mostly naturalistic and some very moving. www.blowstar.blogspot.com - JohnnyFox | 21 Nov 08 |
