| This was the first show I have seen at The Globe. I was very impressed by the atmosphere and staging. I didn't feel that the two principals had the experience or depth to carry off the heightened emotions required. I wasn't convinced about their passion for each other, and was unmoved about their plight. However, the older, more experienced, cast members were more convincing, and I was moved by the scene where Juliet's mother mourns her apparent death on the day of her marriage to Paris. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.75.14.249) | 18 Aug 04 | |
| Maybe it was because I saw it during their visit to Hampton Court Palace, but I thought this was one of the best Shakespeare productions the Globe company have done - in the same league as last year's Richard II and the previous year's Twelfth Night. The lovers were really convincing and the play raced along. Great to see a production that doesn't mess around with a classic play that doesn't need messing around with ! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (172.140.112.77) | 12 Jul 04 | |
| I've seen thee play several times and it has improved dramatically since the opening night. James Garnon is excellant as Mercutio. The experiment with original pronunciation was very well done giving a different slant on the text and well worth the effort. As with all the "original practices" productions at the Globe the clothes, music and dancing were superb and I highly recommend seeing at least one, if not ALL the productions on in the 2004 Globe season. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (217.42.227.198) | 01 Jul 04 | |
| For me, the fundamental flaw of this production was that it simply didn't make me believe that Romeo and Juliet were in love, and hence I wasn't moved at all by the ending. I really didn't care that they'd killed themselves. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.255.64.8) | 15 Jun 04 | |
| I had to walk out in the middle which in extremely rare circumstances, but I could not stand and watch how they marred Shakespeare. If you want Globe experience, see Much Ado About Nothing, which has a much better cast overall. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (144.82.212.217) | 31 May 04 | |
| I saw the first preview and several perfs since (I steward at Globe so wil be seeing it a lot!) and it has developed a lot-James Garnon as Mercutio esp. It's sold out and audiences are thoroughly enjoying it which is the main thing!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (82.69.37.108) | 25 May 04 | |
| I really want to support the Globe, but this was appalling! Romeo and Juliet were totally mis-cast and feeble, and the whole thing appeared under rehearsed, it was the worst thing I have seen in London, I loved 12th night last year, but this is pitiful, and not even good enough to be classed as a schoool play! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (82.69.37.108) | 22 May 04 | |
| First preview tonight so rough round the ages (more work especially needed on quick changes) But visually stunning, handling of verse wonderful, especially Friar Lawrence (John McEnery) and James Garnon (Mercutio) Tom Burke is going to be a huge star!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (213.48.145.69) | 08 May 04 |
