starstarstarstarFLATSPIN, the second of the Damsels in Distress trilogy is an entirely different animal from GamePlan - here the piece has a very strong intricate plot, some very funny set pieces and little of the black side of Ayckbourns writing. The theme I think here is betrayal - every character ends up duped by one or more of the others, yet all have the desire to trust. Again superb performances by this very talented company and flawless direction by Ayckbourn. I loved the way Robert Austin steps aside to allow a young woman (Saskia Butler) to pass by into a potentially dangerous situation - it is so low key that many miss the moment, yet it neatly sums up the deception which pervades this piece. Overall I preferred this piece to the first and now cannot wait for the third play - RolePlay which opens soon. - USER: Whatsonstage.com13 Aug 01
