| Brilliant - loved by all the family. I don't normally like adults playing the parts of children , in this case both the leads were believable and they helped greatly to make the play a success. - Gary | 19 Aug 09 | |
| Like the first reviewer, I too thought the guy who was Albert Sandwich was very good as he didn't overact and he was still believable. Otherwise, the play was entertaining but nothing remarkable. - julie | 14 Aug 09 | |
| Excellent theatre. All actors played their parts very well. 5 - Anne Nunn | 10 Aug 09 | |
| The National has proved that there is an adult audience for dramatisations of children's books and Carrie's War is an excellent follower in their footsteps. The experience of evacuees to a remote and devout Welsh valley is beautifully conveyed thanks to a clever stage design and an excellent cast, particularly the adults playing the children, who realise that they don't have to be childish to be believable. In truth the story is pretty slight but it builds to a surprisingly emotional finale, beautifully enhanced by a small choir providing Welsh hymns and arias. Recommended for young and old, and anyone in between. - David Baxter | 21 Jul 09 | |
| Very Unfair review by Whatonstage guys. Sarah Edwardson, James Joyce Sion and Kacey Ainsworth are excellent in a good ensemble cast. The only weak link is maybe Prunella Scales - this doesn't detract from the play though. As for 12 going on 45 I feel this is a totally unfair criticism and a cheap shot I think. None of the children I spoke to had that opinion and neither did I. - Guy Press | 03 Jul 09 | |
| One of my daughters favourite books and we enjoyed this atmospheric production.Cast good but disappointed with Prunella Scales, very hard to hear and atrocious Welsh accent, don't know if she is ill but definitely under par. - Sue Hope | 26 Jun 09 | |
| I took my children to see this and they both enjoyed it. I was quite enchanted with it too. I thought all the "child actors" came across really well. Mr Johnny was excellent and we all laughed at Mr Evans. Not the best ever but an enjoyable evening. - Vicky S | 26 Jun 09 | |
| We enjoyed the play - though irritatingly in the upper circle we couldn't always hear the actors, especially Prunella Scales. I thought, unlike Michael Coveney, that the actors handled the child roles well - they became quite believable as children. It has made me want to read the book now. - Gill B. | 25 Jun 09 | |
| I loved the chap who played Albert Sandwich - really good. The play seemed swallowed up by that set though, and the little snatches of recorded speech and music were more annoying than enlightening. Probably worked better at the Lilian Bayliss, certainly wouldn't recommend to anyone now. - Ally | 25 Jun 09 |
