| Only 2 stars as I felt what was on show was rubbish - sort of university drama department effort but, and it's a big but, it does have potential. There was too much of a Andy Nyman's irritating professor Goodman to start with and too few scary bits. However, it did make me think why someone else hasn't tried this idea before, The Woman In Black excepted. With a major rewrite, lots more scary bits, then I would not be surprised if a run in the West End would not be out of the question. Oh, and why the Jewish thing? That should be dropped for starters. But apart from that I wish them all good luck their original piece of theatre. - rds | 08 Apr 10 | |
| Was it Bernard Shaw who once wrote of some poor pianist 'X played at the Wigmore Hall last night. Why?' The same goes for this production seen at the Playhouse in Oxford. Utterly unconvincing. Most disturbing was Garai as Masha - irritating and unbelievable. Odd, since she was captivating on screen (especially in I Capture the Castle). Also, just could not quite handle the overwhelming Irishness of Irina, even though the lack of coherent direction should have allowed anything. Left at half time to find some vodka. - Gina | 12 Mar 10 | |
| I had the misfortune of watching this play at the Warwick Arts Centre last night - and it was quite possibly the worst play I have ever seen. The writing was choppy, the delivery was frankly confused and the prop placement A very messy play from start to finish. - Kaje | 27 Feb 10 | |
| It's a good idea to update or deconstruct Chekhov. But, if so, the audience should be able to view the play from a fresh perspective and so enrich its view of the play. Unlike some, I watched the whole production but I could not fathom what was gained by putting most of the cast in modern dress and, sadly, I gained no new insight into the play. - fred | 01 Feb 10 |
