| Extremely enjoyable evening with excellent acting (to me Joe Dixon as Tu'an Gu just came top). Greed, evil, honour and good with a nice mix of humour intertwined brought ancient human traits into parallels for the current days. | Review of The Orphan of Zhao 7th November 2012 We arrived last night, with no knowledge of the play of plot, read the synopsis and our hearts sank at the thought of a slow moving, gory Chinese play with unpronounceable names. We departed after a gripping 2 hours 45 minutes, thoroughly entertained and would recommend this play to anyone. The story is based on an ancient Chinese fable or myth, and like Aesop’s fables, contain universal truths applicable for all time. The script was clear, pacy and with humour. Many died, it is true, but gory it was not. Acting was superb, as we come to expect, with Graham Turner standing out as Dr Cheng Ying. The mastiff was brilliant – shades of Warhorse –and vocalisation of babies cries excellent. In short – go and see it yourself. I cannot understand why no review has yet been penned.
