starstarstarstarstar"I was not sure why the author figure was granted redemption by the devil" Because Margarita loves him so much that she goes to hell and back for him - her reward for suffering is to obtain what she wants, i.e. to be with the Master. And he isn't a coward - he is beaten down by the system, becomes one of the disappeared, as did so many in Stalin's time, and as Bulgakov used the notion of disappearing in his novel. I read the book years ago, saw the play, read the book again, want to see the play again, wish there was some kind of discussion circle afterwards for plays like these that continue to play in the mind. What a production, what fantastic performances. Go and see it now. Those of us who did will be talking about it for years to come. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (213.249.173.210)11 Sep 04
starstarstarstarReally theatrical and exciting, it sweeps us along. I was not sure why the author figure was granted redemption by the devil (Woland). Was it true redemption (?) as apparently he hadn't earned it as he had been cowardly in support of his own work. Lots of thrilling performances and this sedate and elderly audience was transformed and enlivened. Well done! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (193.118.206.221)08 Sep 04
starstarstarstarstarAbsolutely brilliant. Michael Feast’s devil steels the show with his great back up from Samuel West’s Master. A fun but thought provoking evening. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (194.216.55.200)25 Aug 04
starstarstarstarstarWow! I read the book only two weeks before, and thought this is unstagable. What a triumph. Great fun and thought provoking. Do not miss this - USER: Whatsonstage.com (80.177.198.242)23 Aug 04
starstarstarstarstarFantastic! Beautifully played, especially by Samuel West and Michael Feast, although the whole ensemble worked so well together. The magical elements were very cleverly done and it was neatly woven in with the satirical commentary on Soviet soceity. The choreography and music really added to the production. Edward Kemp has done an amazing job with this adaption and the whole cast do him justice. The last scene between the Master (Sam West) and Margarita (Clare Holman) moved me to tears, it was so touching. I am looking forward to seeing it again! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (212.50.179.188)07 Aug 04
