 | I first saw this production in the early 90's back in Huddersfield, as part of Bretton Halls lineup - even then the premise was alluring and the development of the production was taking shape. It was evident at that time of development that that I was a witness to a remarkable inclusive work of theatre. Although I have not seen the 1999 or 2002 productions I know, there is a community dimension to this theatre that is often overlooked. | I was bowled over by this production in 1999 and couldn't wait to see it again. Perhaps its novelty value has worn off but I have to say I was a little disappointed; the solos are as good as ever but some of the big dance numbers seemed excrutiatingly over-long (which wouldn't be so bad if only the choreography and non-Handelian music were more interesting). I know many cast members are children and students, but one can only take so much meaningless jigging about and walking round the Quarry Theatre's huge stage. The show would benefit from being cut by half an hour. Still, well worth seeing and a welcome change from the glut of screen-to-stage musicals which have dominated the WYP in recent years. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 14 Jul 02 |
