| This play shocked me in many ways, firstly, it was very well presented - almost like a live version of Two Pints crossed with Skins - and used dance and modern references really well to create a believeable environment (the small scale seating plan of Studio 2 really helped this out). The first act was pretty comedic view of the world many teenagers live in, a bit exaggerated at times, but being 20 it hit a theme I could relate to. The shock came more in the second act with a definate gritty, darker twist, whilst this act focused more on coming to accept yourself for who you are, I was lulled into a false sense of security by the first act, and the events of the second act were a stark contrast to say the least. This was a very good play, I'm not sure how it can be presented outside of the comfort which Studio 2 provides, there's an very intimate feel to the set (which is very nicely done with some photos which can be backlit to provide the character of focus' logo/tag), and on a larger stage it may not translate too well. Overall I think it's a very thought provoking play - particularly for teenagers/gay theatregoers - which should leave you with some lasting questions, I was impressed by it, and would have no quarms with seeing it a second time, lets hope it's recieved well and awarded with what it, and it's superb cast deserve. - Josh Reynolds | 04 Oct 08 |
