| The only plays about the black experience we seem to get are British ones focusing on modern themes of gun culture and American Milleresque period pieces. Though many of these have been great plays - Fallout in the first category and Raisen in the Sun in the second - it is refreshing to get a modern American take, particularly one that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. In an excellent cast, most of whom play multiple roles extremely well, Jenny Jules gives what will probably be looked back on as a career-defining performance. The direction and design are both spot on. A gold star for The Tricycle. - 86.130.207.61) | 05 Mar 06 | |
| What an enjoyably bonkers slice of American social comment. It doesn't go terribly deep (how else could the story of a NY yuppie's spectacular fall from grace be so entertaining and so camp?!) and there are times when it is like watching a living cartoon, or even a black version of Ab Fab... but Rubasingham's production goes at a cracking pace, and the entire cast, led by the rather magnificent Jenny Jules, are spot-on. I laughed, it made me think quite a bit, and I found some of the outrageous plot developments genuinely surprising. Great fun, but with a sting in the tail! - 195.82.123.181) | 28 Feb 06 | |
