| I took 21 AS Drama Students to see this superb play and came away both impressed at the superbly naturalistic and expertly crafted roles and repulsed at just how shocking this play is today. The treatment of Ruth in this house of mysogynists and her willing responses to the men's sexual advances convinced me that Pinter has depicted not necessarily a real world here but an imaginary world in which the subconscious thoughts of sex-starved men find a home on the stage. Ian Holm's Max was played to perfection. The evening was a brilliant study of ensemble acting. The lighting effects were brilliantly subtle and yet so convincing, the scenes involving the pasing of Ruth round as a sex object had my students in stitches. A superb presentation of one of my all time favourite plays. I heartily recommend it! M Coe St. Pauls's Catholic School - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 05 Nov 01 | |
| I recognise that this is fine production with a fine cast, but even if it is a "classic", I have to say I hated this play. I felt absolutely bludgeoned by the end of it. I don't expect my drama too be all sentimental pap, but this leaves you feeling so black and dispirited about the human condition, I think it's a waste. And what hell has Harold Pinter got against women? He is the original Mr Misogynist! Unless you want to sink into a pit of unyielding despair, I recommend you stay away from The Homecoming. Sorry Ian Holm, you're a great actor and I love you, but that's how I feel. - USER: Whatsonstage.com | 27 Sep 01 |
