| The only other London production of this that I can recall was at the ENO in the 80s and my recollection was that is was good - but I don't remember being wowed. Well, I was certainly wowed last night! This is a terrific and timeless piece of musical theatre with a score packed with lovely music, interwoven stories that create a very real NYC community, and well developed characters and stories (not that common in musical theatre!). The production is simple but very effective, the performances uniformly excellent and the orchestra were so good they got as many cheers as the cast (how often do you see that!). The Young Vic's local community have been involved too, with a community choir in the gallery and onstage kids. This is premiere league musical theatre for a third of the price of a West End show and puts companies like ENO to shame. If the Arts Council is serious about funding chasing quality then it's time to divert some from ENO and ROH to The Opera Group whose magnificent achievement this is. - Gareth James | 22 Jul 08 |
