Saturday Night Fever (Apollo Victoria Theatre, West End)

| I'm exactly the right generation to be inspired by SNF, and judging by the high proportion of cardigans and anoraks in the auditorium, the Saturday Night audience at the Apollo Victoria were also looking for a nostalgia fix. But what should have been a camp "hommage" to the generation that invented Disco, was delivered as a student production. Management has downgraded the casting until even the principals seem just out of drama school (or, in one or two cases, failures from manufactured boy or girl bands), which leaves only the show as the star. And it isn't. Muddy diction and hefty reverb on the microphones means that the dialogue is all but lost, and the non-dancing "action" seems to consist of springing boyishly downstage and then running to the backdrop as though beating a retreat. Wise, in some cases. The leads - the nonentities playing Tony or Stephanie - are unlikeable and flat. Stephanie seemed to be wearing a wig made of white yak, and it was giving her trouble. She also looked about 35 under her hard makeup: and sang off-key almost all night. Tony had energy, but no technique, and no charisma: more Travis than Travolta. Of the ensemble, only Alex Jessop stands out: even restraining his personal performance to blend with the rest of the ensemble, he's clearly more talented than the rest of them put together and the only one onstage who has timing, or vocal shading, or an engaging stage personality. The unbalancing of the show by replacing cuddly and recognisable Shaun Williamson with a Jimi-Hendrix wasted-body drug-twitching Jimi Hendrix lookalike, as resident DJ in a club which is supposed to be racially prejudiced (they won't let the blacks or latins with the dance contests) indicates that all production values have been thrown in the bin, along with the rest of the performance which is visibly being downgraded for provincial touring. The Bee Gees should be spinning in their graves. Unfortunately, not all of them are dead yet. ;-)) - 195.93.21.104) | 29 Jan 06 | |
| I've seen Fever several times now and it never fails to amaze me, particularly Rachael Wooding as Annette. One word - flawless. The only thing was the lack of dancing that was she was allowed to do. Suzi Bastone has her good moments and her bad as Stephanie, although her comic timing is to perfection. Adam-Jon Fiorentino is fantastic as Tony, however his acting sometimes leaves a lot to desire. Maybe a bad night? The other star of the show, apart from Rachael Wooding, is Alex Jessop, who stuns the audience as the tormented Bobby C. He made me want to give him a big hug and completely shocked me suring "tragedy". Who would have known such a huge voice could come out of such a small person? All in all -one to watch! - 217.33.207.195) | 08 Nov 05 | |

| Having seen SNF with the original cast, inlcuding Adam Garcia, it quickly became one of my favourite West End shows. But in its new home at the Apollo Victoria it seems to be failing to attract the audiences it most definately deserves. It is two hours of sheer bliss. The dancing blows your mind, the music is electric and the audiences love it. Deserving particular praise is Rachael Wooding in the role of Annette. Her voice is stunning, she is clearly capable of more dancing than the role allows and her portrayal of the naive teen is at times extremely poignant. In contrast, Suzy Bastone seems weaker and slightly nervous about her West End debut as Staphanie, alongside the more experienced Wooding who outsings her in 'Nights on Broadway', but in time, it appears that this young actress will also shine. The lead role of Tony is played by Shaun Mulligan with a lack of conviction, but one thing is for sure - that boy can dance, but he isn't the complete package of Garcia. Altogether this is still one hell of a spectacle, and an utterly brilliant night out which is guaranteed to leave you wanting more. Everyone must see it. - 81.129.237.194) | 28 Aug 05 | |
| Being a huge fan of the show, I was very excited at the opportunity of seeing the show in it's new surroundings, formerly the London Palladium, now the Apollo Victoria. As ever, the show just blows you away, the score is electric, the cast had energy and life and the choreography gave you goose bumps (Particularly the Latin dance scene in the competition!). You just want to get up and dance, and girls are found throughout the theatre, tapping their boyfriends leg in time! My only reason for giving a 4, and not 5, out of 5 is, having been used to the original show at the Palladium, I missed the huge sets, a few scenes had been cut and a decision had been made to change one of Annette's most amazing original songs, "Who's Sorry Now?". It is always hard not to watch the show and almost spit at yourself as you hear yourself think 'but it's just not Adam.' (those of you familiar with Adam Garcia's original performance will know what I mean!). It's not a fair comparison to make as the role of Tony Manero is a feat in itself, and anyone taking it on should be commended, but he truely WAS Tony Manero and one of the best west end musical dancers and performers. All in all though, an incredible show, and the DJ, Monty, will never fail to shine as he did last night....great character work and amazing Disco Duck! If you haven't seen this show you MUST! It's West End Musicals at their best! - 83.104.147.138) | 29 Jul 05 | |
| The epitome of a fun night out: colourful, exhilarating, slickly staged, and with genuinely stunning dancing. True, the dialogue's flat as a pancake (a cheesy one!) but there's considerably less of it than in the original Palladium version. In many ways (the beefing up of the role of the plain girl who loves the disco dancing hero, the cutting of certain numbers and the adding or enhancing of others, the shorter script) this version would suggest that Arlene Phillips and her collaborators have learned from the problems of the Pally show and this streamlined version plays better. The classic numbers are all here and are generally sung better than in some previous editions of the show. In the current cast, Sean Mulligan endows Tony with the requisite athleticism plus a good voice, and a kinder, gentler air than some of the his predecessors, although nobody will ever dance the role as beautifully as Adam Garcia did originally; I also missed the vulnerability this production's previous lead (Stephane Anelli) brought to the part. Still, Mulligan is more than capable of carrying a production of this size. Alex Jessop's nerdy best friend, Rachael Wooding's torch-carrying Annette, and Steven Serlin's outrageously randy DJ all leave strong impressions. For me though, the best turn comes from Suzy Bastone's Stephanie, Tony's gorgeous but common-as-muck dance partner. She looks stunning, is a great dancer and makes a thankless role into something funny and ultimately touching. All in all, this is a long way from being "art" but it's not trying to be. For a night of noisy, upbeat, escapist enjoyment though, you could do alot worse. - 195.82.123.181) | 29 Jul 05 | |
| Went to see Saturday Night Fever last night and overall found it 2 be an enjoyable couple of hours- great seats in the stalls at a good price. the singing was great and the dancing... wow! sadly missed rebecca dent ( no explanation for her absence) but her understudy and all other cast members did a great job with the so-so story. on another note the stalls were pretty much full but i dont think the balcony's were even in use- what a shame! if you are looking for a fun energetic lively show then saturday night fever is for you! - 84.67.229.192) | 01 Jun 05 | |
| I have been to see saturday Night Fever 2 times now and found each time amazing. Kym Marsh is amazing as Annette and really shone passed all my expectations, Stephane what a great dance a little fast at times, but all in all a great dance and he can sing, even though he is not as good as Travolta, but who is. Zoe Ebsworth as Stephanie was ok yet the accent let her down at times. But for me Alex Jessop stole the show as Bobby C and to me really felt his character. Overall a great night out for singing and dancing the night away event though it has me crying at some pionts, definatly a good night out. - 195.93.21.102) | 31 May 05 | |
| Not a patch on the pallidium days ...but who cares , you go for a good night out and are left rocking as its still breathtaking dancing and singing !!!!now thats its discounted as well worth a night out - 195.93.21.102) | 17 May 05 | |
| i love saturday night fever i have benn to see it twice now and i think it is great!!!!!!!!!! I think that alex jessop is fantastic as bobby c!but stephane was a bit dissapointing i think alex would be better as him because he is a better dancer and singer i also think that kim marsh was the best annette because of her wonderful voice i woul d highly reccomend that you go and see it !!!!!!!!! - 195.92.67.68) | 15 May 05 | |
| May 7th 2005 - 1945 performance. Words fail me that such an inept production can have a run in the West End. This must surely rank as the worst musical it has ever been my misfortune to see. Terrible acting performances. Music drowning out the singing. Awful sets. Cheap costumes. A show that under runs so they stick in an extra 10 minutes of sing-a-long at the end to make you think you've had VFM. This'll be posting closing notices soon. AWFUL, AVOID. - 62.254.189.98) | 09 May 05 | |
| I saw the show last month when I visited from the US. It was very entertainng and I took at that and thoroughly enjoyed it. Vocals were great in my opinion, and of course the dance choreography. A must see. - 64.154.26.251) | 28 Apr 05 | |
| I took my 11 year old daughter to see this show on Monday eve, it's the sixth time I've seen it. I love the music, the dancing is second to none, consistantly but some sets are a little disappointing. I miss the original 'jive talking' set. I like that they've upped Annettes part and added 'Nights on Broadway'. Stephane is alright as Tony, but having seen Adam Garcia, who could compete? I've also seen Alex Jessop play Tony and I prefer him. In fact I think he's probably the over all star for me, his voice is fantastic and his dancing is awesome. He has fantastic timing and moves so naturally, making it look easy, which is really how it should look. He is excellent as Bobby C and as his stage presence is so much more than most, you feel drawn to him and notice the intensity he puts into the character. We also saw charlie Bull as Stephanie and she was excellent, the best I've seen since the original cast. Rebecca Dent was also extremely good with a great voice, Steven Serlin was a fun Monty. All in all a really good night, leaves you feeling very up beat and ready to dance. I'm only thirty so my daughter and I got away with a bit of night fever on the way home. Well done, I'll be back. - 195.92.67.208) | 06 Apr 05 | |
| I have enjoyed this show many times but I disagree with the comment below that it doesn't matter what the audience do. It does - as Monica says - when it detracts other peoples enjoyment of a show and brings a show into disrepute. No cast want stalkers - especially not if they are talking about them publicly where anyone can over hear them. It is not about bums on seats. It is about the quality of the theatre going experience and when we pay £45 a ticket I don't want to be upset by these people. I too know who they are and I wish they would stay away. | i think that Alex Jessop is the best actor in the whole world. he really enters into the mind of his character, and looks gr8 on stage. He is reallllllllllllllllly fit, and sooooooooooooooo cute!!!!!!!!!! How can anyone think otherwise? - 193.164.126.19) | 24 Jan 05 | |
| The show was FANTASTIC every moment brilliant, the ones who made it the best were Alex Jessop and Kym Marsh, saw it again cos thoughtAlex was fabulous but S Anelli was on instead of Alex and didn't think show as good then. Heard that Alex on Friday matinees so that is when I will be going for my third time! - 195.93.34.11) | 08 Jan 05 | |

| me and my boyfriend went to the show on saturday night and it was AMAZING. the usher who let us in told it was sold out (which is about 2300 people apparently) and god when that many people are having a good time the amosphere is great. the guy playing tony manero was great but the understudy and kym marsh is truly great, her voice is beautiful and the accent is surprisingly good. the dancing too i really cool, really complicated. only down point is that some of dialogue us a bit clunky but hey on the whole BRILLIANT - 217.13.129.151) | 25 Oct 04 | |
| We went to see the show on Tuesday the 5th of October at 7.30pm. It was very enjoyable. The music was good and the dancing excellent. Kym Marsh sang really well and was the real star -well done Kym ! We were amazed that the theatre was so empty - not even a quarter full. I am surprised by some of the critical ( and unjustified) comments that appear on these pages- it makes me wonder if I saw the same show. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (80.41.108.94) | 07 Oct 04 | |

| I honestly dont know what some people want when they go to see a musical. The music stands up on its own........ its the Bee Gees for goodness sake. Kym Marsh was a revelation and has a really beautiful voice. Shaun Williamson was excellent. Stephane played Tony at the performance we saw. He was great. A good voice and a brilliant dancer. It seems the whole world is a critic..... dont see the critics getting up on stage though do we???? Or all the people that have slated the show. Lighten up. Relax. | Alex Jessop excellent as Tony, reminded me of Adam Garcia's fab performance! He is the star, much better than Stephane as Tony! Kym Marsh excellent as Annette. I waited afterwards at the Stage Door. She signed lots of autographs and was very friendly! Shaun Williamson was funny as Monty! As always, a great night out- I have seen it eight times now! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.30.182.129) | 24 Aug 04 | |

| On the whole the show was brilliant and the solo of Tragedy was fantastic. The dancing was very good especially the latin american routine. The only bad peformance was that of Stephanie who completely overdone the accent and overacted. Stephane Annelli had charisma and Shaun Williamson was extremely funny and tongue in cheek. A very enjoyable night out for both myself who was sixteen when the original film came out and for my daughter who was celebrating her 16th at the show. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.255.64.8) | 14 Aug 04 | |

| I saw the original London production in 1998 twice, as I thought it was so brilliant! So I could hardly hide my disappointment seeing the current production at Apollo theatre. The guy who played Tony Manero lacked charisma and was constantly outshined by other cast members, the girl who played Stephanie would do better if she didn’t have to sing, as that obviously isn’t her forte. Pretty much every cast member was struggling with the American accent and couldn’t keep it up for the duration of the show… (It went from bad American, to Aussie to British…) Kym Marsh is not the greatest of actresses or a very good dancer but that girl can really sing and has got a great presence! All in all I did enjoy it, the music was is great, some of the dancing really good and it is a good night out, leaving you feeling upbeat. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.190.167.211) | 03 Aug 04 | |
| Id never wanted to see this, but there was a two for one and thought id give it ago. Both myself and my friend enjoyed it, but there was something lacking, just coudnt pin point it. Not as bad as I was expecting, and the dancing was very well done. We had the understudy for Tony and he played it well, although obviously copying Travolta. Kym Marsh and the guy from Eastenders were much better than I thought. Im surprised its getting quite so many five stars on here, but it is worth a look if you can get a deal, not sure id pay £45.00 a ticket, its worth it! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (81.174.228.177) | 02 Aug 04 | |

| Well where do I start. I had so many expectations but feel very let down. The dancing is great and slick and the sets are ok (if a little cheap), but the show just lacked any real depth and felt i was just watching song after song with the story not too important. To the cast: Kym Marsh - Her role of Annette seems to have been bumped up because of her star status. Thank god she is a great singer (very powerful) as she is one unconvincing actor. She held her own with the dancing though. Shaun Williamson - as DJ Monty seemed very embarassed to be on stage. Stephane as Tony - what a mammoth task to take on the role after Ben Richards and Adam Garcia shone in the original. He just lacked the presence, could dance but was an average singer. Although he had the female audience lapping him up after he took his shirt off very early!! Zoe and Stephanie - I feel for her. Amazing dancer, competent singer and actress but is left in a thankless role and hardly appears in act one. Her love affair with Tony was very much swept aside for the star power!! And no solo song to sing either. Alex Jessop as Bobby C - Didn't feel for his character and his situation and felt nothing at the end. The backing track to Tragedy sounded like Steps!! Most songs were also sung to a backing tape of the singers despite a live orchestra... As I said the dancing was slick but this show left me cold. If you love We will rock you, tonights the night, Grease, Fame and those style of shows you'll love it. If you want something that works on all levels.. AVOID. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (217.35.141.121) | 16 Jul 04 | |

| Having seen the show b4 in the West End, and on it's two UK Tours I have to say the return of the show to the West End leaves something to be desired. Of course there are new things back like the discofloor (the last Tour lacked one!) and glitterballs worth shouting about!!! Not too sure about the bridge tho!!! Im still a bit undecided what I think of Kym and Shaun...but Im sure they will grow on me in time! I feel the show somehow was miss-cast and there are ppl IMO that deserved bigger parts than they've got! Stephane is good but I definitely preferred DAVID SELLINGS as Tony! Stephane just doesnt have the 'WOW' Factor that David had. Also not too keen on Alex as Bobby C, to me he just doesnt try. Darren should return as he WAS Bobby C!!! I just cant fault Darren, bless him! A complete STAR in my eyes. Im not being harsh its just my opinion! There are certain cast members making their West End Debut in SNF and I hope they get recognised for their talents as they deserve to go far :o) - USER: Whatsonstage.com (82.34.90.195) | 11 Jul 04 | |
| I think WOS' review was more than harsh! I saw SNF three times on tour, so had to see it in Victoria. It lacked some of the slickness from the tour, but it's different in a huge London theatre! Shaun Williamson is fantastic in it - he is hilarious and is in great shape. Kym Marsh sings beautifully and does the dancing amazingly well. Stephane Anelli - great dancer but not great to look at up close! Alex Jessop - star of the show without a doubt. Get your tickets now - you will not be disappointed! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (81.153.223.68) | 10 Jul 04 | |

| Oh what a disappointment. I saw the show on tour,a couple of months ago, before the final tour cast change, and was amzed by the depth of acting strength shown. Unfortunately, going into the West End has not improved it at all. It was shalow - bring back Darren Carnall in either of the roles he played (BobbyC or Tony) if the depth is to be regained! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (212.50.167.60) | 08 Jul 04 | |

| If you want a great party night out, book now! The show is slick, brilliantly danced and fabulously sung. Kym Marsh is a revelation - fab! We came out and danced down the street to Victoria tube, with big smiles on our faces! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (212.158.240.105) | 07 Jul 04 | |
| Fantastic night out. Final number had everyone up and dancing. Slick production, good cast, the Puerto Rican dancers were great. Sure some people ni the press will give it a hard time but what were they expecting? Hamlet? It's a feelgood night out, so go on and treat yourself. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (212.187.228.132) | 07 Jul 04 | |
| ohhh some person was happy to come to press night and then be bitter! a great night out, does all it sets out to do, I have never seen dancing like it. a total party night out and will give work to this, by today's standards, very large West End house for some years to come. the public will just love it and dance out the door. a standing ovation from over 2,000 people is some success. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (217.13.129.151) | 07 Jul 04 | |
| And people are wondering about the state of the West End?! Here's another addition. Nice dancing though. - USER: Whatsonstage.com (81.130.134.238) | 07 Jul 04 | |
| I love this show, I have followed this show through from the Palladium to the tour and now to Victoria. (the fact that my sister is dance captain could be why I love it so much)!! Tony leaves alot to be desired in the sex appeal however his dancing is second to none! Kym Marsh blew me away I was suprised that she was so good. But the biggest mention has to be to my sister playing Donna she is fab, always at the front and stands out a mile for dancing ability!! love and a bit shout to IJY! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (62.252.64.13) | 07 Jul 04 | |
| fab show, we went on the opening night, not a hitch in sight. Sean was brilliant as the DJ, wasted in Eastenders, can't say that Kym Marsh actually stood out but great singing nevertheless. Tony Manero was absolutely brill, this is the third time I have seen SNF, Adam Garcia definitely the best. Sat in the circle row k good seats, excellent view, finale is the best bit for me. Go see it and YOU SHOULD BE DANCING, YEAH!!! - USER: Whatsonstage.com (195.93.34.14) | 03 Jul 04 | |
