La traviata (Royal Opera House, West End)

| Richard Eyre's sublime production of La Traviata is stunning. One of the most lavish operas ever staged at Covent Garden, it radiates with sumptuous costumes and opulent sets. Renee Fleming makes a gorgeous Violetta and continues the wise tradition of this version of casting beautiful women to make it entirely plausible that men would faint at her feet. There were big cheers too for Joseph Calleja and Thomas Hampson was as reliable as ever. La Traviata is not the most indepth opera and, forgive me, but I found Act II Secene 1 tedious and overlong, but the spectacle of Act I and the gypsy and torreador dancers in Act II Scene 2 were sensational. Highly recommended. - DJ | 15 Jul 09 |
