Henry IV Part I

Synopsis

Young Prince Hal is leading a dissolute life, hanging around bars with his notorious friend Falstaff and other disreputable characters. Meanwhile King Henry IV, who has usurped the throne, is facing growing opposition, which becomes open rebellion led by the courageous young Hotspur. Prince Hal casts off his wanton ways and joins his father's side as the King meets the rebellion in a dramatic battle.

Getting up at 6.30 am for an early school run and then setting off for North London for a morning show is probably not the best preparation for a Shakespeare production, especially one as serious as the second in the RSC's Histories consecutive marathon. Whatever the reasons I just couldn't get into this and lost concentration on several occasions, despite the Roundhouse's severely uncomfortable seats. I am sure it was brilliantly acted (Hotspur and David Warner's Falstaff managed to make an impression) but 10.30 is not a good time for a history play. A pity because under other circumstances I'm sure I would have appreciated it far more....
