Could Oscar-nominated song 'Suddenly' be added to Les Mis on stage?

Date: 22 January 2013

Claude-Michel Schonberg, co-composer of Les Miserables, has revealed that the song "Suddenly", which was written especially for the film version of the hit show, could one day be incorporated into the theatrical production.

Schonberg was speaking during a special BAFTA Masterclass on the sound design of the film held at London's BFI Southbank last Friday (18 January). In answer to a question from the audience about whether the Oscar-nominated song would ever be used on stage, Schönberg said, "It's possible. It is something we are looking at, although changing stage musicals is like causing earthquakes. So while I’m not saying no, it is a work in progress."

The composer added that he and lyricist Alain Boublil might also move the song "I Dreamed a Dream" to a different place in the show, as has been done for the film.

Joining Schonberg on stage were the film's director Tom Hooper, production sound mixer Simon Hayes (who has received Oscar and Bafta nominations for his work on the film) and orchestrator and score producer Anne Dudley. During the evening all three paid tribute to Boublil and Schonberg's flexibility and openess during the process of moving Les Misérables from stage to screen.

i'm glad i was not the only one who found the song boring and virtually brought the film to a halt - you want to get from the thernadiers to paris so the story can really get moving not stick a pointless song in grinding things to a halt - bad idea ! - geoff

The song is dull and pointless. It served only as a leeway between the Thenardier's waltz and entering Paris and wasn't even executed well on any level. All that is going to happen if changes are made is that you will piss a whole world of people off; you'll make absolutely livid fans who have followed the musical for 27 years. Les Miserables has lasted so long because there's a heart to it, a heart that was derived from the story and the original music, not a song created to cover three minutes of wasted space just so try to grab an Oscar. If you're going to add songs back in, stick in Little People and the extensions cut from the wedding. Keep making changes and you might just find people joined in a crusade AGAINST the show. - KL

Urgh, the song is insipid and was only written to get an Oscar. The lyrics are dreadful and the show didn't need it. Plus so much of the original score has been CUT since 1985, so why not consider putting that back in if we're suddenly deciding to lengthen the musical again? - RS
