Stephen Fry plays Lady Bracknell at Drury Lane?

Date: 18 January 2013

Stephen Fry is reportedly set to play Lady Bracknell in a production of Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane next year.

Fry told the Daily Mail that he sees his Lady Bracknell "as a little bit of Alastair Sim's Miss Fritton, clutching pearls; with a mixture of Stanley Baxter's 'Duchess of Brenda".

Producers David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers have reportedly been in talks with Fry, who is currently appearing in the West End in Twelfth Night, for over a year.

According to the Mail's Baz Bamigboye, "The plan is for the production to run at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane during the autumn of 2014."

Currently at the venue, one of the West End's largest theatres, Shrek finishes on 24 February ahead of Sam Mendes' staging of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which is due to begin previews on 18 May.

Rotten idea. There aren't all that many great parts for older women. This is one of them. Just. Don'T. Do. A. Male. For. Bracknell. DON'T. EVER. I don't want to see Fry mincing around the stage pulling focus, no matter if he's the focus or not. - Karen H. - London
