Damian Lewis comes home for Me and My Girl?

Date: 4 January 2013

Damian Lewis has reportedly been involved in talks to star in a West End revival of classic Noel Gay musical Me and My Girl.

Lewis, who has hit the big time in the States starring in TV drama Homeland, is "yearning" to play cockney charmer Bill Snibson in a production later this year, according to the Daily Mail.

Though nothing has been confirmed, producer Alex Armitage (whose grandfather was Noel Gay) is keen to sign Lewis up for the revival, which is likely to be staged later this year. He told the Mail's Baz Bamigboye, "It would be a wonderful idea to get Damian to play Bill."

First seen in 1937, Me and My Girl has music by Noel Gay and lyrics by L Arthur Rose and Douglas Furber who also jointly wrote the book, which was revised in 1984 by actor-writer-comedian Stephen Fry with contributions by Mike Ockrent. The score includes “The Lambeth Walk”, “The Sun Has Got Its Hat On” and the title song.

Lewis, who according to Bamigboye was scheduled to star in Anna Mackmin's 2010 revival at the Sheffield Crucible but had to withdraw, revealed he has been honing his vocal skills with "Sondheim sing-alongs" with Homeland co-star, Broadway legend Mandy Patinkin.
