Miss Saigon follows Les Mis onto big screen?

Date: 2 October 2012

West End impresario Cameron Mackintosh has revealed plans to make Miss Saigon into a film if the forthcoming Les Miserables film is a success.

Starring Eddie Redmayne, Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, the multi-million-pound adaptation of Les Miserables will be released this Christmas.

Miss Saigon, a musical theatre adaptation of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, was produced originally by Mackintosh and tells the story of an ill-fated romance involving an Asian woman and an American soldier.

Mackintosh is happy that he is able to devote his time to making film adaptations of his own productions, telling the Daily Telegraph recently, “I am in that glorious position where I can redesign and re-package my own work”.

However, he is aware that there is more work to be done on Les Miserables before he can embark on Miss Saigon; he plans for the worldwide promotion of the upcoming film to take “a whole month”.

Miss Saigon, which ran for ten years at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane from 1989, has long been rumoured to be making a West End return.
