Read all about it: is Newsies coming to London?

Date: 4 September 2012

Start spreading the news... it looks like Disney's latest hit musical Newsies could be heading for the West End. Rumours of a transfer have been swirling for a while but we hear word that producers are now actively seeking a suitable London home.

Based on the 1992 film of the same name that starred Christian Bale and Bill Pullman, the show centres on the exploits of a group of newspaper boys in 1900s New York, and features music by Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Sister Act the Musical), lyrics by Jack Feldman, and a book by Harvey Fierstein (La Cage aux Folles).

The show was nominated for eight Tony Awards, including Best Book, Best Actor (Jeremy Jordan) and Best Direction of a Musical (Jeff Calhoun), winning two - Best Score and Best Choreography (Christopher Gattelli).

A London production wouldn't be likely to open until late 2013 or early 2014, depending on venue availability.

Other rumoured Broadway imports include Spiderman: Turn off the Dark and Peter and the Starcatcher.
