London Road returns to National, plays Olivier in August?

London Road, Alecky Blythe and Adam Cork's musical verbatim theatre exploration of the 2006 Ipswich serial murders, will continue it's already extended run at the National Theatre, the pair announced at today's Critics' Circle Theatre Awards.

Blythe, who scripted the piece using extensive recorded interviews with local residents, set to music by Adam Cork which matched the melody and rhythm of the interviewee's speech patterns, told those gathered at the Awards that the show would return in August, moving from the NT Cottesloe to the NT Olivier.

London Road, which is directed by Rufus Norris, premiered on 14 April 2011 (previews from 7 April) in the NT Cottesloe and has already enjoyed an extended run at the National, playing an additional eight weeks from 5 July to 27 August 2011. That extension saw the National open up their Paintframe scenic workshop as a performance space for the first time, hosting a season of new writing double bills in the space which had previously been scheduled for the NT Cottesloe.

Full details of the National Theatre's upcoming productions are expected to be announced at artistic director Nicholas Hytner's annual press conference tomorrow (25 January 2012). Whatsonstage.com will be covering the event live both online and on Twitter from 11am.
