Book of Mormon Pegged for Prince of Wales in 2013???

Date: 6 January 2012

Rumours that Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The Book of Mormon could be West End bound started almost as soon as the hit show opened in New York early last year. Producer Sonia Friedman will reportedly bringing the show to London with speculation now centred on where and when.

Baz Bamigboye writes in today's Daily Mail (6 January 2012) that show could be pegged for a berth at the West End's Prince of Wales Theatre, but pushes back its anticipated opening date to the start of 2013, long after current residents Mamma Mia! move to the Novello on 1 September 2012.

That, he says, will allow another production a limited season at the venue before The Book of Mormon arrives.

Created by South Park's Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q's Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon centres on two young Mormon missionaries dispatched to convert an African village and satirises everything from religion to The Lion King. The show opened at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre on 24 March 2011 (previews from 24 February) and remains one of New York's hardest to get tickets.

It was announced in October that long-runner Mamma Mia! would make its second West End flit, playing its final performance at the Prince of Wales on 1 September 2012. The musical, penned by former ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, will reopen at the Novello Theatre on 6 September 2012.

@Excelesior How can you say it has forgettable songs? I couldn't get them out of my head for days, and it's one of the best selling musical soundtracks of all time! I saw it on Broadway and it's one of the top 3 things I've ever seen in the theatre. Also 'American' musicals are about as diverse as you can get. Can't wait for it to come here, I think I'll end up going several times (if I can get tickets!) - Nat

I don't agree, I am so excited about the Book of Mormon, and the fact that it is American is sort of irrelevent! Wicked is now not seen as American, just international and hey, it's great to have a diversity of musicals! I doubt when War Horse went to the States they thought "oh not another English play PLEASE" because it has good content. I read today that it will be previewing from February 2013. I am really excited and am going to book my tickets as soon as they are released! Us Brits love a cheeky bit of satire, even if it is American in origin. http://www.thebookofmormonmusical.co.uk/ - MarGE

Not another miserable American musical PLEASE! Thank goodness it is opening at the Prince of Wales .... not a theatre with a history of introducing NEW material to London and going on to have a long run. One can only hope that this musical (which I have seen on Broadway) will soon be gone. Why 'Wicked' is STILL running in London, I can not explain. 'The Book of Mormon' is filled with songs that, like those of 'Wicked', are forgotten the second one leaves the theatre. - Execelsior
