Book of Mormon Pegged for Prince of Wales in 2013???

Rumours that Tony Award-winning Broadway musical The Book of Mormon could be West End bound started almost as soon as the hit show opened in New York early last year. Producer Sonia Friedman will reportedly bringing the show to London with speculation now centred on where and when.

Baz Bamigboye writes in today's Daily Mail (6 January 2012) that show could be pegged for a berth at the West End's Prince of Wales Theatre, but pushes back its anticipated opening date to the start of 2013, long after current residents Mamma Mia! move to the Novello on 1 September 2012.

That, he says, will allow another production a limited season at the venue before The Book of Mormon arrives.

Created by South Park's Trey Parker and Matt Stone and Avenue Q's Robert Lopez, The Book of Mormon centres on two young Mormon missionaries dispatched to convert an African village and satirises everything from religion to The Lion King. The show opened at Broadway's Eugene O'Neill Theatre on 24 March 2011 (previews from 24 February) and remains one of New York's hardest to get tickets.

It was announced in October that long-runner Mamma Mia! would make its second West End flit, playing its final performance at the Prince of Wales on 1 September 2012. The musical, penned by former ABBA members Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, will reopen at the Novello Theatre on 6 September 2012.
