At the press launch last month for the revamped Laurence Olivier Awards, Julian Bird, chief executive of awards organiser the Society of London Theatre (SOLT), was asked how the Oliviers could possibly compete with the Tony Awards power to pull performances from the likes Liza Minnelli and Elton John. Though they have yet to announce a concert line-up for the ceremony at the West End’s Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Sunday 13 March 2011, sources close to the Oliviers tell Whatsonstage.com that expectations will not just be met, but well exceeded. Minnelli and John, then? “Think bigger,” we’re told - and we’re promised that one of the international stars signed up to take part will cause major headlines as soon as their plane touches down. Any guesses? More announcements are due very soon indeed.
