Will Minchin's Matilda Dream Come True??? Date: 13 December 2010
The RSC's new musical adaptation of Roald Dahl’s Matilda opened last week (9 December, previews from 9 November 2010) at the Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon where its music and lyrics by Australian comic Tim Minchin and book by Dennis Kelly have wowed the critics. The Guardian's Michael Billington was delighted, our own Meriel Patrick thought it was the "perfect festive family show" whilst Charles Spencer at the Daily Telegraph thought it was the "best British musical since Billy Elliot". We at Whatsonstage.com are now wondering when the production might make its way from Stratford-upon-Avon to the West End. Speaking to Minchin about the production, which stars Josie Walker, Lauren Ward, Paul Kaye and Bertie Carvel as well as three teams of children, he said he hoped the musical would run for 30 years, gets made into a film and, in typical Minchin sytle, be projected on the moon. He did also suggest that there might be a transfer in the offing for next year, saying that having his show play the West End would be a "dream come true". With this year's 12-week festive run nearly completely sold out, we can only hope Dahl, Minchin and musical fans will get a chance to see the show in London soon.
