Billy Dances His Way Into White House???

Date: 2 September 2010

The Broadway cast of Billy Elliot will find themselves dancing to a different tune on Tuesday, 7 September 2010, as they perform at the White House at the invitation of First Lady Michelle Obama. The performance, which is part of the Administration's first event celebrating dance is a tribute to Judith Jamison, honouring her for an outstanding career as a dancer, choreographer, and artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater which she has led for 20 years. Four boys currently share the role of Billy at Broadway's Imperial Theatre where the musical has played since 2008. The stage production reunites the creative team behind the 2000 film: director Stephen Daldry, writer Lee Hall and choreographer Peter Darling. It features an original score by pop singer-songwriter Elton John, with lyrics by Lee Hall. Billy Elliot has played to over 2.5 million people worldwide since it had its world premiere in May 2005 at London's Victoria Palace, where its now booking through to 9 April 2011. The musical, which scooped Best Musical prizes in the Laurence Olivier, Evening Standard, Critics' Circle and Whatsonstage.com Awards in the UK was winner of ten Tony Awards in 2009 including Best Musical.
