Douglas Hodge Is What He Is: Tony Contender???

Date: 20 April 2010

Meanwhile, unlike with The Addams Family, Broadway critics have been falling over themselves to heap praise on London’s very own Menier Chocolate Factory revival of La Cage aux Folles, which opened at New York’s Longacre Theatre on Sunday (18 April 2010) and particularly its British star Douglas Hodge, reprising his drag queen performance as Albin. It’s “a bravura Broadway debut” hails the New York Times’ infamous critic Ben Brantley, who goes on to declare that Hodge’s take on “I Am What I Am” is “the most electric interpretation of a song on Broadway right now”. Not bad going for an actor better versed in Harold Pinter than Rodgers and Hammerstein. Any bets on whether Hodge can add a Tony Award to his 2009 Olivier for the role?

I haven't yet managed to get to New York yet to Cage but I fully support and endorse Douglas' nomination for a Tony Award, and that of Kelsey Grammar. I'm sure they are a great team! I saw the show many times in London and particularly loved Douglas, the Cagelles who were quite breathtaking, and also Philip Quast and Roger Allam whom I found equally superb. It was fitting and lovely to have Douglas close the show and I was there to cheer him on on his final London night! Good luck mate and keep up the good work!! - Pam Stevenson

As a major fan of Douglas Hodge and La Cage aux Folles (I had seen it 18 times in London - I know, I know!!) I begged, borrowed but did not steal the money and there I was on Broadway, in New York to support Douglas. He was, as always, absolutely wonderful and the show has transferred without a hitch, it is exactly the same (and Douglas has some different frocks). He is ably supported by Kelsey Grammar and the American cast. I did, however, only intend to stay for four nights but because of the volcanic ash I was stranded for two weeks (I hope Douglas appreciates that). I am sure that he will be the top contender for a Tony award. - Sheila Parry
