Barrowman Meets the Doctor on New Album??? Exclusive Clip!

Date: 25 February 2010

The worlds of TV sci-fi and musical theatre have collided in a bonus track on John Barrowman's forthcoming solo album.

Recorded exclusively for the iTunes version of the album, "The Doctor and I" is a re-worked version of "The Wizard and I" from Wicked, about Captain Jack - Barrowman's character in Doctor Who and spin-off series Torchwood - and his relationship with the Doctor.

Barrowman explains, "I first sang this version of the song at a concert in Wales for, amongst others, David Tennant and Russell T Davies, and they loved it ... We've given it new lyrics to make the song relevant to Captain Jack and his relationship with the Doctor. It’s quirky, it's funny and it's really good. I'm terribly proud of it."

The actor is fresh from winning a Whatsonstage.com Award for Best Takeover in a Role (for La Cage Aux Folles - Wicked picked up Best West End Show), and was also recently named one of the most powerful figures in theatre on The Stage 100 list.

Stephen Schwartz, who composed the original song, is clearly pleased with the results. “It's always fun for a songwriter to hear a talented singer take a song and do something different with it" he said, adding "I have been lucky enough to have the terrific John Barrowman do it with two of my songs, the enchanting new duet arrangement of 'So Close' from Enchanted (with Jodie Prenger's fantastic voice blending perfectly with John's) and John's 'wicked' re-imagining of The Wizard ... Thank you, John, for making this songwriter very happy."

The John Barrowman album is released on 1 March 2010 - click 'play' to hear an exclusive clip of "The Doctor & I".

Oh come on, this album is John at his best! Great songs, fantastic voice. If you don't like it then that is your choice, but don't bad mouth him to those of us who recognise real talent! - Palookadeb

Oh, get over it and have some fun! If you don't like John Barrowman go do something else you do like and let the rest of us enjoy him. - Maureen

Oh my God... is this the most cringe-worthy song ever recorded? A new nadir even for John Barrowman. "TV's greatest team - the Doctor and I" - his arrogance really is boundless, isn't it? - Quentin
