Is Trevor Nunn a Menier Chocoholic???

Date: 16 February 2010

Trevor Nunn seems to have developed something of a theatrical sweet tooth, revealing his new-found love of the Menier Chocolate Factory.

Following his award-winning revival of A Little Night Music last year (currently running on Broadway with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Angela Lansbury), Nunn is returning to the Chocolate Factory in a “few months” to direct a mystery show.

Accepting his award for Best Director at the Whatsonstage.com Awards Concert on Sunday (his fourth WOS Award), for his work on Night Music and the Old Vic's Inherit the Wind, Nunn paid tribute to the 150-seat Southwark venue's ability to stage quality productions on “a shoestring budget”.

“The actors all have to dress in one big collective dressing room, so there is no hierarchy at all. And it is wonderful because every bit of the focus is on the work and therefore the atmosphere is wonderful right across the building. I recommend it to all my colleagues.”

He then revealed: “I am very happy to be going back there to do another Chocolate Factory show in a few months’ time under the (David) Babani banner.”

Although he didn't reveal the production, it could well be another Sondheim musical to mark the composer's 80th birthday this year. Whatever the project, it will likely open in July, following Hal Prince and Susan Stroman's production of new musical Paradise Found, which stars Mandy Patinkin and begins previews on 19 May (See News, 12 Feb 2010).
