Zeta-Jones & Lansbury Lead Broadway Night Music???

Date: 23 September 2009

The forthcoming Broadway transfer of Trevor Nunn's acclaimed Menier Chocolate Factory revival of Stephen Sondheim's A Little Night Music will feature a new-look cast, led by Hollywood star Catherine Zeta-Jones and five-time Tony Award winner Angela Lansbury.

The only London cast member to survive the transatlantic transfer is Alexander Hanson, who will reprise his role as Fredrik Egerman.

Zeta-Jones, who recently said that the role will mark "a huge change career-wise", replaces Hannah Waddingham as Desiree Armfeldt, while Broadway legend Lansbury plays Madame Armfeldt, the part played at the Chocolate Factory and in the West End by Maureen Lipman.

Although now established American stars, both actresses are British born, with Lansbury rumoured to be making a homecoming to the West End next year playing another Madame, Arcati, in a potential mounting of Noel Coward's Blithe Spirit at the Theatre Royal Haymarket (See The Goss, 24 Jul 2009).

A Little Night Music opens at Broadway's Walter Kerr Theatre on 13 December, with previews from 24 November.
