Johnson & Cartwright Hunt for New Little Voice???

Date: 28 May 2009

It looks like Jim Cartwright's Olivier Award-winning comedy The Rise and Fall of Little Voice could be set for a West End revival later this year.

The play, which premiered at the National Theatre back in 1992 starring Jane Horrocks before transferring to the Aldwych Theatre, was subsequently adapted into an Oscar-winning film in 1998, again starring Horrocks as the diva-impersonating heroine.

Rumour has it that fellow Olivier award-winner Terry Johnson is on board to direct the revival, and together with Cartwright is currently overseeing the search for an actress to succeed Horrocks, who was nominated for an Olivier award in the role on stage and slew of film awards for the subsequent adaptation.

It's a big ask for whoever lands the role - Cartwright wrote the play especially for Horrocks after hearing her impressions of the likes of Judy Garland and Shirley Bassey during rehearsals for another of his plays, Road.

Cartwright has just released his debut novel, Supermarket Supermodel, which follows the rise and fall of a young checkout girl who is plucked from obscurity and transported into the intoxicating world of modelling.
