Gwyneth Paltrow Back in West End with Sisters???

Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow made her London stage debut in 2002 in the UK premiere of David Auburn’s Proof, in a sell-out season at the Donmar Warehouse, going on to reprise her performance in the film version (See News, 15 May 2002). Seven years later and, according to the Daily Mail, the American actress, who’s married to Chris Martin from British band Coldplay, is in talks to tread the boards again.

Columnist Baz Bamigboye reports that Paltrow is negotiating to appear in a new production of Three Sisters, which would form part of the Theatre Royal Haymarket’s second season of in-house productions. Chekhov’s classic 1901 drama – centring on siblings Masha, Olga and Irina who are stuck in a Russian army outpost, dreaming about freedom, romance and Moscow - was last seen in London in a double-whammy offering in 2003, when Kristin Scott Thomas starred in Michael Blakemore’s West End production at the Playhouse and Eve Best headed Katie Mitchell’s staging at the National.

Further details of second Haymarket season, which opened last week with the Ian McKellen/Patrick Stewart-led revival of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, have not yet been confirmed but an official announcement is expected imminently. The second production, between Godot and Three Sisters, is expected to be Breakfast at Tiffany’s, in a new adaptation of Truman Capote’s novel written by Samuel Adamson and starring Anna Friel (See The Goss, 1 May 2009).
