Ford Davies Lets Slip Hamlet Film Plans???

Date: 2 March 2009

Good news for those of you who signed the petition to get a filmed version of David Tennant's Hamlet (See The Goss, 19 Jan 2009) – according to yesterday's Sunday Telegraph, it looks like the project is going ahead.

Speaking to reporter Tim Walker at the launch of the Olivier Awards last week, Oliver Ford Davies, who played Polonius in the production and is nominated in the Best Performance in a Supporting Role category, said: "We are intending to film it over two or three weeks in June. It won't be a full feature film as there isn't time but it will certainly be more than just the filming of the stage. It will be fantastic to work together again."

A spokesperson from the RSC wouldn't confirm to Whatsonstage.com that the filming is going ahead, but did say that the company is “trying to facilitate” a shoot in the forthcoming months. “As you can imagine, the logistics of getting everyone together are proving quite tricky” she added.

As a friend of Margret Best who started this petition, I am delighted at the news that one may be going ahead. As ever, I won't rest easy until I have a copy in my hands, as I know how delicate organising productions like this can be. And to "Upset", I would like to have seen Patrick's performances too, but as someone who has seen this production I'd remind you that it has been celebrated by critics and fans alike, and it is not just David's performance which has made this one of the best Hamlets in recent times. It deserves to be seen. - Nicola

Awwww, that's great news indeed!!! I'm one of the unlucky ones who didn't get to see David performing and for me it took a lot off the pleasure as I wanted to see him play Hamlet - I'm not saying anything bad about his understudy and in any other case would have been just as happy to see the play regardless of who was in it but not this time. I am looking forward to the DVD ever so much! THANK YOU, RSC! - Ina

I have a number of RSC filmed performances on DVD and am delighted that Hamlet will be hopefully available to those of us who saw the breathtaking performances by all of the cast, including David Tennant and Patrick Stewart. (And by the way "Upset" FYI Macbeth wasn't an RSC production). I am pleased that "people power" helped to get this production filmed as it gives those RSC members who did not get a chance to see it, and others who are interested, an opportunity to see theatre at it's best. I hope that the logistics of getting the original cast together doesn't prove to be an impossible task. The draw of David Tennant did put "bums on seats" BUT his performance was hailed by critics and theatregoers alike - and not just his "fans. Hamlet will be etched into my memory for a long long time - and hopefully in the none too distant future I will have a DVD to mull over the finer points once more. WELL DONE RSC. - Dawn

Why just Hamlet because David was in it. There are tons of fans who like to se MacBeth, Anthony and Cleoprata and all the plays Patrick Stewart starred in. - Upset
