Lloyd Webber Says Hello, Connie! in 2010???Date: 5 January 2009 Rumours are rife that Andrew Lloyd Webber is planning a West End revival of the enduringly popular Jerry Herman musical Hello, Dolly!, starring his How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria? protégé Connie Fisher in the title role. Lloyd Webber reportedly let slip his plans recently whilst addressing journalists to promote his latest television project, BBC Eurovision talent-hunt Your Country Needs You. It is thought the planned production is linked to Fisher's involvement in the forthcoming regional tour of the Lloyd Webber-produced revival of The Sound of Music, in which she will revive her role as Maria (See News, 26 Nov 2008). The Guardian suggested recently that Lloyd Webber would cast Fisher as a reward for rejoining the show, though due to the length of the tour, which kicks off in Cardiff in August, any planned production of Hello Dolly! would have to wait until mid-2010 at the earliest. Hello, Dolly! premiered on Broadway in 1964, winning ten Tony awards including Best Musical. It successfully made the transition to the big screen in 1969 starring Barbara Streisand in the title role, winning three Oscars out of seven nominations. Based on Thornton Wilder's 1938 comic play The Merchant of Yonkers, the musical follows the story of Dolly Levi, a strong-willed matchmaker who travels to New York in an attempt to find a match for the wealthy but miserly bachelor Horace Vandergelder. | Comment | Date | | 40 years after the screen version, the two most suitable actors for the lead roles are Streisand and Michael Crawford. How much would you pay to see Streisand reprise her role as Dolly, and Michael Crawford move to the lead, from Cornelius to Horace? - Wahnoot | 20 Jan 09 |
| | This site has been careless with its information for a decade or more now - Connie Fisher was from the TV show "How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria" (casting for Sound Of Music), not "I'd Do Anything" in which Jodie Prenger won the role of Nancy in Oliver. Honestly, proof read! - SRK | 08 Jan 09 |
| | Well!! That's a dead duck!
Ludicrous casting, just checked in case it's 1st April. - Richard Caswell | 07 Jan 09 |
| | Connie's way too young (Streisand was way too young in the movie!) Needs someone like Kathryn Evans or Ruthie Henshall in the role. - Steve | 07 Jan 09 |
| | Connie Fisher is MUCH TOO YOUNG to play Dolly Levi!!! The character is supposed to be a middle-aged widow. Barbara Streisand was also much too young when she appeared in the film. However,Danny La Rue was FABULOUS in the role in the West End - AND the right age. - Rebecca Brown | 07 Jan 09 |
| | Connie doesn't have the personality to carry off a role like Dolly Levi. - TBFL | 06 Jan 09 |
| | Great news for all us Connie fans. Can't wait for this to happen she so deserves to be back in the West End.Things that are good are happening for Connie at last. - arol Burridge | 06 Jan 09 |
