Blonde Bombshells Head for West End???
Date: 10 September 2001
Alan Plater’s BAFTA Award-winning TV drama,
The Last of the Blonde Bombshells, could be heading for the West End next year. A stage version of the film, which starred Dame
Judi Dench and Joan Sims, is rumoured to be in production with the author himself adapting the work. Plater’s story concerns the struggle of a recently widowed woman to reassess her life following the death of her husband. She decides to regroup the all-female swing band that she performed with during World War II, as an act of defiance against encroaching old age. Plater’s film was made on locations in London and Scotland, and features a jazz and swing soundtrack including
Taking a Chance On Love and
When the World Was Young. The writer’s latest play,
Only a Matter of Time, is a comedy which premieres at Newbury’s Watermill next year. Dame Judi will lead the cast of the theatrical drama
The Royal Family, when it opens at London’s Theatre Royal Haymarket from 1 November 2001.
