Daldry & Mendes Decline the National???
Date: 17 August 2001
Stephen Daldry and Sam Mendes are believed to have declined invitations to apply for the National Theatre's directorship. This leaves Jude Kelly (spotted at the NT's opening night of Humble Boy recently) as one of the firm contenders alongside John Caird and Nicholas Hytner. Daldry and Mendes have caught the public attention via such films as Billy Elliot and American Beauty respectively, although both are established stage producers. Jude Kelly, who made her mark at the West Yorkshire Playhouse, is thought to have made a move south for family reasons, but has strong support among London theatre critics. Trevor Nunn's colourful, and occasionally controversial, tenure at the NT ends next year.
