‘H’ Takes Steps Towards Godspell???Date: 16 August 2001 Ian ‘H’ Watkins, part of the pop sensation Steps, is rumoured to be lined up for a planned production of Godspell. The singer, who has expressed an interest in a musicals career, is known to have met potential producers for a revival of the show. A West End berth would doubtless be secure for Godspell with or without the participation of ‘H’, who would be following in the footsteps of David Essex - star of the original West End version. The show is based on the Gospel of St Matthew and interprets the final week of Christ’s life. Written by Stephen Schwartz and Michael Tebelak in the late 1960s, complete with flower children in place of disciples, Godspell’s score includes Day By Day and All Good Gifts. The musical opened Off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre in May 1971, before clocking up over 2,000 performances on Broadway. A movie version, starring David Haskell and Victor Garber, followed in 1973.
