Pop Supergroups Make Musicals Gold???
Date: 19 June 2001
Abba did it with
Mamma Mia, the Pet Shop Boys did it (less successfully) with
Closer to Heaven. Now a fellow pop supergroup is turning its songwriting talents to the stage. Queen has teamed up with comedian/playwright
Ben Elton - whose first foray into musicals,
Andrew Lloyd Webber's
The Beautiful Game, is still playing at the Cambridge Theatre - on a musical whose title, story and cast are still under wraps. All that's certain is that it'll feature songs (old and new) from Queen. Meanwhile, Ray Davies' - frontman of yet another seventies supergroup, The Kinks - has penned his own musical,
Come Dancing, which may jig its way into the West End within the next year.
