Sister Act’s West End Transfer Ordained???

Date: 16 April 2008

The producers of US screen-to-stage musical Sister Act are rumoured to be looking for a West End theatre later in the year. The musical - which premiered in Pasadena, California back in 2006 – was subsequently staged in Atlanta last year. Since then, the expected Broadway transfer has failed to materialise, with producers now apparently looking at the prospect of a London run first.

They could face some stiff competition however from fellow big-screen musical adaptation Legally Blonde, the Broadway hit which is also chasing a West End home for late 2008 or early 2009 (See The Goss, 31 Jan 2008). The Apollo Victoria is thought to be top of the Legally wish-list, but current incumbent Wicked, now taking bookings until 4 April 2009 (See News, 2 Apr 2008), seems to be settling in nicely there. The Piccadilly Theatre, currently home to Grease, has also been mooted.

So, with West End space at such a premium, who will win the battle of the blockbusters? Other musicals aiming to come to town over the coming months, assuming they can all find homes, include Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (See News, 4 Oct 2007), Zorro, Eurobeat, Gypsy, Barnum and Spring Awakening - to name but a few!
