The Sun Responsible for Corrie Musical Scare???
Date: 26 March 2008

The Sun tabloid newspaper reported last week that Dawn Airey, an ITV executive, suggested that the channel’s long-running popular soap - Coronation Street would be turned into a musical, following in the footsteps of Bad Girls last year … which didn’t do so well in the West End! But fear not, theatre lovers – it was all a misunderstanding!

Airey was quoted as saying that, “Musicals and plays have done good business for things like films so why not TV shows? ITV have some powerful programme brands which don’t have to exist just on the telly.” The West End is full of movie-to-musical remakes - Billy Elliot, Dirty Dancing, Grease, Hairspray, The Lion King etc. – but at the moment lacks any TV-to-musical attempts. Airey says, “Loose Women would be ideal. You can make money out of The Vagina Monologues, so what’s the difference?” but there was no direct mention of ‘Corrie’ in the conversation.

We’re safe for now … but who’s to say that the likes of ITV, the BBC and Channel 4 won’t weigh in with their own shows in the future???
