Adamson Reimagines Ibsen’s Eyolf in 1950s UK???
Date: 20 November 2007

As previously reported (See News, 2 Oct 2007), playwright Samuel Adamson will reunite at the National Theatre with director Marianne Elliott, with whom he had a 2005 hit with Pillars of the Community, for another go at Ibsen. However, in an interview with Whatsonstage.com (See 20 Questions, 19 Nov 2007), Adamson explains: “It’s not really a new version. I suppose the best way to describe it is a re-imagining. I’ve taken Ibsen’s play and re-located it so it’s set in England in 1955. It’s called Mrs Affleck. It should in open in autumn 2008.”

Ibsen’s 1895 original revolves around married couple Rita and Alfred Allmers and their guilt over their nine-year-old son Eyolf who was partially paralysed following an accident as a baby which occurred while his parents were making love.

This week, Adamson’s adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar’s Oscar-winning 1999 Spanish film All About My Mother, starring Lesley Manville and Diana Rigg, finishes its run at the Old Vic, and his new play Some Kind of Bliss, a solo piece written especially for actress Lucy Briers, opens at the West End’s Trafalgar Studios.
