Eurobeat & Debbie Top Edinburgh Transfer Lists???

Date: 31 August 2007

Many of this year’s Edinburgh hits – including The Bacchae with Alan Cumming, Venus as a Boy, Discotivity with Michelle McManus – pre-arranged their London transfers long before the Festival began this month. Others have taken the more traditional route of actually using their Scottish dates as a try-out – but that doesn’t mean they won’t hit venues in London or elsewhere soon.

The shows that we hear are busily working out transfer and tour arrangements now include: the Australian-originated interactive pop comedy Eurobeat: Almost Eurovision, which won Best Musical Production in the Fringe’s inaugural Musical Theatre Awards (See News, 24 Aug 2007); Debbie Does Dallas, a tongue-in-cheek musical adaptation of the soft-focus 1978 porn film classic; Certified Male, an Australian riposte to The Vagina Monologues starring Les Dennis; and Johnson and Boswell – Late But Live, in which comedian/Jerry Springer director Stewart Lee has devised a book launch for Samuel Johnson and James Boswell 200 years after their famous travels.

West London’s Riverside Studios is also likely to bag engagements for American Daniel Beaty’s one-man play about a modern-day slave ship Emergen-See and Kahlil Ashanti’s comic tour of duty Basic Training as well as, if dates work with a planned world tour, Hugh Masakela’s musical Truth in Translation, based on stories of interpreters from South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Committee.
