Mamma Mia! A Record-breaking August???Date: 7 August 2007 Les Mis isn’t the only musical long-runner marking a milestone this month (See Today’s Other Goss). Abba blockbuster Mamma Mia!, which celebrated its eighth West End birthday back in April, is poised to become the longest ever running show at the Prince of Wales Theatre on 18 August 2007, overtaking the record previously held by Andrew Lloyd Webbers’ Aspects of Love which closed in June 1992 after just over three years. As if that weren’t enough, Mamma Mia! also celebrates its 3,500th performance in London on 23 August – but who’s counting? Mamma Mia!, based on and inspired by the songs of Abba, is a tale of family and friendship which unfolds on a Greek island paradise. On the eve of her wedding, Sophie’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago. The musical has already been seen by more than 30 million people worldwide and grossed over $2 million at the box office. It’s currently booking until the end of June 2008.
