Young Vic Award Comes as Surprise at National???
Date: 20 July 2007
Congratulations to Hilary Vernon-Smith, head scenic artist at the National Theatre. She’s the winner of this year’s coveted Young Vic Award, which was given to her in a surprise presentation at the NT last night. The prize – decided by a panel of Young Vic staff and guests including directors
Stephen Daldry,
Phyllida Lloyd and
Rufus Norris – is given annually to a theatre professional who, through their life’s work, has encouraged and inspired a younger generation.
Vernon-Smith has been the NT’s head scenic artist since 1988 and has overseen the painting of over 350 productions. According to Phyllida Lloyd, she “epitomises all that the Young Vic Award stands for. She is an unsung heroine of British theatre, an inspired artist and mentor to generations of younger scenic painters and designers. The queen of the paintframe!”
