ENO Follows Kismet with Music Man???Date: 2 July 2007With a poor set of reviews for their production of Kismet last week (see Review Round Up, 28 June 2007), the English National Opera may be looking forward to moving on to their next musical theatre venture rather swiftly. And, according to the Daily Mail, that’s exactly what they’re doing, with the company expected to stage the 1957 Tony Award winning musical The Music Man at the London Coliseum next year. The ENO may have hoped that Kismet would go on to receive the sort of reception garnered by their 2005 production On The Town, which received a revival run earlier this year, however after reports of backstage disputes between director Gary Griffin and choreographer Javier De Frutos – which led to De Frutos’ withdrawal from the production - it seems unlikely that Kismet will be returning any time after its limited 18 performance run. The Music Man, with book, music and lyrics by Meredith Wilson, was revived by Susan Stroman on Broadway in 2000, running for 699 performances. Related Content |
